The cultivation and promotion of African Indigenous Vegetables (AIVs) have been a focal point of the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO). Recognizing the nutritional and economic value of AIVs, KALRO has been actively involved in research, development, and dissemination of improved varieties and sustainable cultivation practices.
Through its initiatives, KALRO has introduced and enhanced AIV varieties that are well-adapted to local agro-ecological conditions. These vegetables, which include various leafy greens and traditional crops, not only contribute to diversified and nutritious diets but also serve as potential sources of income for smallholder farmers.
KALRO's engagement extends beyond variety improvement; it encompasses training and extension services for farmers on best agronomic practices, pest and disease management, and post-harvest handling. By collaborating with local communities and stakeholders, KALRO aims to strengthen food security, promote biodiversity, and elevate the livelihoods of farmers engaged in the cultivation of African Indigenous Vegetables across Kenya. This concerted effort underscores KALRO's commitment to sustainable agriculture and the well-being of local communities.
