Description
Dairy sector holds a significant position as the largest agricultural sub-sector in Kenya contributing 44% of livestock, 14 % agricultural and 4% of national GDP and supporting 1.8 million small scale farmers. However many challenges have hampered its growth to a vibrant subsector that would transform the livelihoods of these small-scale farmers who contribute over 70 % of the milk produced in Kenya. The main challenges are feeds and feeding, low breed performance, poor markets and marketing, disease challenges, and low value addition, among many others.
Success Stories
The sub-sector employs 1.8 million small scale farmers and provides 750 direct jobs and another 500 indirectly in Kenya economy.
Well established institutions that include regulator KDB (Kenya dairy Board), KAGRIC (Kenya Animal genetics Centre), milk processors including government owned New KCC. DTI (Dairy Training Institute) Farmer cooperatives and many local and international linkages like ILRI.
The dairy value chain has attracted development funding from world bank supported projects (EAPP, NARIG, KCSAP etc.) and many other development partners due to its significance in supporting many livelihoods.
