About the Conference and Exhibition

The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) announces the First Socio-Economics and Policy Development (SEPD) Conference. Research in KALRO SEPD sheds light on trends and drivers of change that shape food systems, guiding informed decision-making to enhance productivity, resilience, and sustainability for improved livelihoods. The conference is organized in collaboration with partners and stakeholders in the agricultural sector. It provides a platform for experts and practitioners in various fields to explore, share, and exchange experiences in building resilience and transforming the agri-food systems.

Objectives of the Conference

  • Exchange knowledge in current research methods in socioeconomics and policy analysis.
  • Propose actionable strategies to enhance resilient food systems.
  • Provide a platform to forge collaborations among researchers.
  • Provide a platform for sharing evidence-based research with policymakers and development partners.
  • Provide a mentorship space for young and upcoming socio-economists and policy analysts.

Building Resilient Agri-food Systems through Socio-economic and Policy Research

Present agri-food systems are not sustainable. Chronic hunger and malnutrition remain high and have increased recently due to several overlapping crises.

Profound system transformations are required for agri-food systems to contribute more effectively to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs align with Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Sub-themes

The submitted papers will cover the following thematic areas:

  3. Agricultural financing and investment
  4. Agricultural marketing and market systems
  5. Agricultural policy research
  6. Agricultural research methods and analytics
  7. Agribusiness models in agri-food systems
  8. Climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies
  9. Dissemination of agricultural research outputs
  10. Gender roles and social equity in agri-food systems
  11. Institutional and behavioral studies in agriculture
  12. Novel approaches in agri-food systems research and policy analysis
  13. Sociology and anthropology in agri-food systems

Conference Procedure

This will be a hybrid conference where corresponding authors shall either present papers in person at KALRO Headquarters or virtually. Those presenting virtually will be required to share a pre-recorded presentation as a backup.

Papers presented at the conference will be published in "Proceedings of the First KALRO Socioeconomics and Policy Development Conference." Selected papers will also be published in a special issue of The East African Agriculture and Forestry Journal (EAAFJ), which is part of African Journals Online (AJOL).

Poster sessions will be available during the conference. Authors who prefer to present posters should specify this during submission. However, they should submit full papers initially.

Poster Guidelines:

  • Poster size: 33.11 × 46.81 inches (A0)
  • Should be simple, visually appealing, and informative
  • Must be easy to read with clear legends
  • Should combine text and illustrations harmoniously
  • Must tell a complete story
