About the Institute
The KALRO, Sheep and Goat Research Institute  is one the research institutes created under the KALR Act of 2013. Its headquarters is in Marsabit Research Centre (Marsabit County). The Marsabit research Centre was established in 1987 and took over facilities and staff from the UNESCO funded Integrated Project for Arid Lands (IPAL) implemented in mid 1970s and mid-1980s. The sub-centres are used by scientists when doing research work in the respective areas but the facilities are also hired out to other stakeholders operating in the area at a fee as a way of generating revenue. Most of the research activities are implemented in different areas within Marsabit and Isiolo counties.

Kalro Kiboko (Arid and Lange Land Research Institute)

Centre Location : Makindu, Kenya

The Institute is located at Kiboko in Makindu Sub-County of Makueni County, about 160 km SE of Nairobi, along Mombasa - Nairobi Highway. The Institute head office is 6 km south of the Kiboko market, on Mwailu Hill. The size of the land is 15,512 ha.  It lies between latitude 2° 10' and 2° South and longitude 37° 40' and 37° 55' East.

Kalro Marsabit -SGRI

Location
The Institute headquarters is located in Marsabit County of northern Kenya, 600 km from Nairobi along the Isiolo-Moyale road. It operates four sub-centres namely: Kargi, Ngurunit, Gudas and Gatab/Mt. Kulal. The sub-centres are located 70, 150, 67 and 200km, respectively, away from the Institute headquarters and they all fall within the Laisamis sub-county.

Kakamega (Non-Ruminant Research Institute)

Centre Location : Kakamega, Kenya

The Institute will conduct focused research on pigs, poultry, rabbits and other emerging livestock with a potential for commercial farming. In the past, these animals did not receive adequate attention in research and development. These animals have proved to be highly prolific with high returns and have great potential to contribute to food security, income generation and poverty alleviation


The headquarters of the Institute are in KALRO Kakamega in Kakamega County. This is highly populated and productive area of the county and indigenous chicken is a major enterprise in the county and the surrounding counties.
