Action Focus and Foundation
This action seeks to support KALRO’s research on climate smart agricultural technologies. It builds on the past gains that KALRO has had with other diverse technologies under the 10th EDF and before, which have been adopted by farmers and the private sector. KALRO also seeks to promote adoption of these technologies by adopting a Public-Private Partnership approach for diffusion of the research which has already been validated.
Overall objective of the Action
The overall objective of the Action is to strengthen productive, climate change adapted and market integrated small holder agriculture aiming to reduce the national food deficit and improve agriculture sector competitiveness.
Specific Objective
Climate change adapted and innovative agricultural technologies with potential for market integration developed and adopted.
ASAP-APRP
Past Donor support focused on developing appropriate technologies for ASAL areas through KALRO centres based at Marsabit, Kiboko, Naivasha, Katumani, Muguga and Mtwapa. The EU supported implementation of the ASAL APRP that ended in 2017. Several technologies, among them improved indigenous chicken, new high yielding and drought tolerant crop varieties including their agronomic packages were generated and some were rolled out. Arising from ASAL APRP, the following was achieved:
